Question

What do I do to resolve the Moodle error "Exception - OpenSSL error: error:0909006C:PEM routines:get_name:no start line"?

Solution

When testing the tool configuration in Moodle, you may see this error:

Exception - OpenSSL error: error:0909006C:PEM routines:get_name:no start line

When testing the tool configuration, Moodle may return the error message "Exception - OpenSSL error: error:0909006C:PEM routines:get_name:no start line."

Here are some steps to get around this error.

1.      If you are using Chrome, try Firefox instead. Moodle often works better with Firefox than Chrome, so switching the browser may remove the issue.

2.      If you are pasting a Public Key into the tool configuration (instead of using a Keyset URL), set the Public Key Type dropdown to RSA Key. Also make sure to include the -----BEGIN PUBLIC KEY----- and -----END PUBLIC KEY----- comments when you paste the key.

When configuring the tool in Moodle, set the Public Key Type dropdown to "RSA key." When pasting the Public Key into the textbox, make sure that you include the "-----BEGIN PUBLIC KEY-----" and "-----END PUBLIC KEY-----" comments. They are part of the key.
